80% of blindness cases are in rural India, are mainly due to limited access to eye care services.


50-60% of adults needing spectacles cannot obtain them because of unavailability, cost, or lack of awareness.


Transportation is a major hurdle, with many rural patients traveling 20-30 km or more to access eye care

Our Solution

Since 2007, Akhand Jyoti has extensively researched and deliberated on methods to extend care to all individuals in need in the community. 

Commonly used interventions like eye camps serve as relatively effective mechanisms to reach some patients in rural areas but operate on a non-permanent basis.

 Addressing avoidable blindness and visual impairment necessitates community-level eye care facilities that offer continuous care and cater to future eye care needs. Vision Centers typically serve as a connection between the community and tertiary eye hospitals. Positioned within the community itself, these centers become the focal point of addressing the community’s need for eye care

What is a Vision Center

Compact, permanent eye- care facility 

A vision center is a compact, permanent facility established in rural areas to provide primary eye care services to rural communities, where there is limited or no availability of eye care service

Staff

Optometrists trained by Akhand Jyoti through the "Football to Eyeball" program manage the center, while ophthalmologists provide specialized consultations to vision center patients via teleophthalmology.

 Eye care providers in developing countries face significant challenges in delivering services to all who require them. Hospitals are frequently inaccessible to remote communities. Although eye camps serve as a useful method to reach some rural patients, attendance is often low. 

Akhand Jyoti's Vision Centers are set up to serve the rural marginalized community with accessible, affordable eye care services. Of the patients who seek care at Akhand Jyoti's VCs, over 80% of the patients can be fully treated on-site. Less than 20% of VC patients are referred to the base hospital for further treatment, usually for surgery or advanced investigations.

Since launching its first VC in 2009, Akhand Jyoti has established over 40+ vision centers, covering a population of close to four million in Bihar.

The Vision Center (VC) model of Akhand Jyoti is also an extension of its signature "football to Eyeball" program aimed at empowering rural women as entrepreneurs with a specific focus on serving rural communities. 

These VCs serve as pivotal hubs for primary eye care within the community, typically led by female optometrists who embody gender equality in the face of the patriarchal norms prevalent in low-income rural areas

The girls trained as skilled optometrist passing out of "football to eyeball" program are employed as Senior Optometrist who are in charge of leading the Vision Center- a critical step in providing employment opportunities.

Additionally local girls, from within the community are identified, trained and provided employment in these centers across profiles like front office executive, optical dispenser and counselors, creating a promising cycle of employment opportunity specifically for rural girls from within the marginalized community.

Human Resource in a typical Vision center involves 1 senior Optometrist, 1 Receptionist, 1 Optical Dispenser and 1 community outreach worker.
